Avoyelles events for Martin Luther King Day

   Several special events are planned today and Monday in Avoyelles Parish to commemorate the work and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who is honored with a national holiday on Monday. Listed below are marches and programs scheduled in this parish.

Today, January 17
   Bunkie -- Salem Missionary Baptist Church at 107 S. Ash Street in Bunkie, will present a youth program at 11 a.m. in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Monday, January 18
   Marksville -- The Too New For You civic organization will begin its 23rd annual Martin Luther King Day celebration at the D.A. Jordan Complex on Scallan Street, at 9 a.m. A march will begin at 9:30 a.m., starting at the corner of Scallan Street and Martin Luther King Dr., going to N. Preston Street and ending at the Holy Ghost Catholic Church gymnasium.
   A special program entitled "Stick with Love" will be presented at 10 a.m. in the gymnasium. The event is free to the public and refreshments will be served.

Bunkie -- The city of Bunkie will celebrate Martin Luther King Day with a parade Monday afternoon. Line-up for the parade will begin at 4 p.m. on Ash Street.  The parade will leave Salem Missionary Baptist Church at 4:30 p.m., then turn left on Ebony Street, left on Main Street and left on Church Street before returning to the church on Ash Street.
   Bishop Melvin Jackson will be the keynote speaker for the MLK Memorial Celebration Service at 5 p.m. in the church.
 
Mansura -- The town of Mansura will sponsor a Martin Luther King Day celebration beginning at 5:30 p.m. on Monday.
The celebration will begin with a candlelight march down L'Eglise Street from the Family Dollar store to the Cochon de Lait Pavilion next to Mansura Town Hall.
    Mark Crawford, pastor of Christian Family Worship Center, will be guest speaker at a commemorative ceremony at the pavilion. Other pastors of churches will also speak during the ceremonies. The “St. John Voices of Change” from Marksville, will perform during the event. Other praise and worship teams are set to perform.

Cottonport -- Martin Luther King Day ceremonies in Cottonport will be held at Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church on Ducote Lane. The church and its pastor, Rev. Chris Augustine, are serving as the host for several area church commemorative services. The MLK Service of Remembrance will begin at 1 p.m. with Rev. Charlie L. Jones of St. James Baptist Church in Moreauville, as guest speaker.
