Shooting victim critical; gunman kills himself

A Marksville man was in critical condition after being shot multiple times in the chest this past Wednesday night. The suspected gunman later shot himself in the head and died early Thursday morning.
Marksville Police Chief Elster Smith said officers responded to a report of a shooting on Legion Drive at about 8:15 p.m. Wednesday. They found Demetrius Johnson with multiple gunshot wounds.
Johnson, whose age was unknown as of press time, was taken to an Alexandria hospital where he was listed in critical condition.
The suspected shooter was Shaun Gilbert of Marksville. Police also did not have his age as of press time.
“We received information that the suspect  was on Overton Street,” Smith said. “Officers arrived at the scene and saw children running, saying, ‘He has a gun.’”
Shortly after arriving, officers heard a single gunshot from a residence. Upon entering the residence, they found Gilbert with a serious head wound.
Gilbert was taken to Avoyelles Hospital and then transferred to an Alexandria hospital where he died early Thursday morning, Smith said.
Smith said it is not clear if the residence on Overton Street Gilbert fled to was his, a friend’s or a family member’s. The case is still under investigation and details are being gathered, he said.
No motive for the shooting has been determined.
