Legislative Auditor investigation gives Marksville an 'all-clear'

By Raymond L. Daye,

After months of examining City of Marksville financial records, the state Legislative Auditor’s Office (LLA) gave the city an “all-clear” verdict, concluding there were no “reportable issues.”

City officials were notified by the town auditor earlier this year that the Legislative Auditor’s Office would be in town to investigate allegations of financial improprieties. Those allegations focused on the city water department operations.

In response to a public records request, District Attorney Charles Riddle provided the newspaper with a brief email sent to him by LLA Investigative Audit Services Manager Gregory Clapinski March 20.

“As we discussed earlier, our work at the City of Marksville did not uncover any reportable issues. If we had discovered any evidence to support an allegation of criminal activity, we would have issued a public report that would have been submitted to your office,” as required by state law, Clapinski wrote. Clapinski cited the applicable statute, which reads, “If the report discloses any alleged criminal acts by any public officer or employee, the Legislative Auditor shall furnish an additional copy of the report to the district attorney of the parish where the offense was committed.”
