Former Evergreen Police Chief arrested for murder

According to Sheriff Doug Anderson, former Evergreen Police Chief, Charles Mayeaux, Jr. was arrested Tuesday on a Warrant of Arrest charging him with the March 21, 2015 death of his wife, Shelly St. Romain Mayeaux. 

Sheriff Anderson said that about 2 a.m. on March 21st Charles Mayeaux, Jr. called the Avoyelles 911 Center reporting that the Cottage St. home shared by the couple was on fire.  Local fire, EMS, and police responded to the residence in Evergreen.  The remains of Mrs. Mayeaux were later found within the charred home by firemen. 

The initial fire scene investigation conducted by State Fire Marshall's found circumstances of a suspicious nature.  A.P.S.O. Detectives were notified and conducted additional crime scene anaysis.  The resutls of hte information gathered at that time caused Sheriff's investigators to open an active investigation into the death of Shelly Mayeaux.

As a result of the joint investigation, evidence was presented to a Judge of the 12th Judicial District Court who issued upon probable cause a Warrant of Arrest for Charles Mayeaux, Jr., age 36, charging him with one (1) count of 2nd Degree Murder and one (1) count of Aggravated Arson in the March 21st death of his wife Shelly St. Romain Mayeaux.

An additional Warrant of Arrest for Charles Mayeaux, Jr. was secured charging him with six (6) counts of Malfeasance in Office and six (6) counts of Theft.  It is alleged that between the years of 2013-14, while serving in his official capacity as the Chief of Police of Evergreen, La., Mayeaux misappropriated public funds from the Village of Evergreen by falsifing gas purchase records.  He is accused of converting the proceeds from these purchases to his personal use.

Charles Mayeaux, Jr. was arrested without incident and booked into the Avoyelles Sheriff's Office DC #1 charged with 2nd Degree Murder, Aggravated Arson, Malfeasance in Office and Theft.  His bond is set at $350,000.00.
