‘Justice for Jeremy’ event postponed

This Friday’s planned protest at the scene of police-involved shooting has been cancelled.
Wendol Lee, president of the Memphis-based Operation Help Civil Rights Group, said he received a lot of calls in support of a “Justice for Jeremy” event. He said another group asked that he postpone the protest until next month to coincide with their efforts. A date and time have not been set, he said.
Lee said the shooting death of 6-year-old Jeremy Mardis on Nov. 3, 2015 is a tragic example of a national issue in which too many innocent lives are lost due to police-involved shootings.
Derrick Stafford and Norris Greenhouse Jr. are charged with 2nd-degree murder of Jeremy Mardis and attempted 2nd-degree murder of the boy’s father, Chris Few. Stafford’s trial is set for Nov. 28. Greenhouse will go to trial on March 13, 2017.
After a pursuit through Marksville, reportedly prompted by a traffic violation, Few's vehicle was penned in at the dead end of Martin Luther King Street, in front of the entrance to the Marksville Historic Site park and museum.
A body camera from another police officer caught the incident on video. It shows Few with his hands up and out of the vehicle just before 18 bullets were fired into the car.
Lee said he was encouraged by the response to the event, which had been scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday. However, he agreed to delay his program at the request of the local group.
He said anyone wishing to contact his organization can call him at 901-691-5705.
