Marksville 'dominant' in crushing Peabody, 34-0

By Raymond L. Daye

The Peabody Warhorses came to Marksville Thursday night without their key offensive weapon and minus two starting offensive linemen and two starting defensive linemen.

The result: Tigers 34, Warhorses 0

While Marksville played well on both sides of the ball, its lopsided victory was due in no small part to the one-game suspension of Peabody quarterback Sadrick "Wanya" Kirklin and the other four starters on the lines, who were suspended for one game in connection with a third-quarter fight during the Warhorses' game with Winnfield the previous Friday. As a result of that fight, the Peabody-Winnfield game was declared a "no contest," meaning Peabody did not get the win and Winnfield did not get the loss they had otherwise earned during the night.

Tiger quarterback Qway Mingo scored the first two touchdowns of the night -- a 39-yard run in the first quarter and a 2-yard plunge in the second. Mingo hit favorite target Torrian St. Romain for a 13-yard pass to end the scoring for the first half. The second half was the Romeo Williams Show with a 4-yard touchdown in the third and a 6-yard scoring run in the fourth.

John Scanlon added four PATs and the Tigers failed on one 2-point attempt to account for the rest of their 34 points.

Williams carried the ball 19 times for 123 yards and caught five passes for 42 more. Mingo ran 23 times for 88 yards and connected on 10 of 13 passes for 118 yards.

Peabody's leading ground-gainer was Bruce Price with 11 rushes for 47 yards. That was almost offset by quarterback Talon Bowens' loss of 31 yards on the night. Bowens completed one pass for 2 yards.

Tiger Head Coach J.T. Dunbar said Marksville was excited to play the Warhorses and would have liked to have played the whole team. However, he said that while the score might've been different, he believes the result would have been the same.

"We played well," Dunbar said. "It was a dominant performance, no matter who we played. We only gave up 35 yards for the entire game."

Dunbar said Peabody showed it has "some very impressive athletes," despite the blowout defeat.

Avoyelles High School Head Coach Andy Boone, able to sit in the bleachers as a spectator for this rare Thursday event, was willing to go out on a limb and predict Markville could very easily win the rest of their games, based on their performance that night.

He was also impressed, for a different reason, with Peabody's performance.

"Without their quarterback ... well," Boone said.

Avoyelles plays Peabody this coming Saturday for the Warhorses' Homecoming. Kirklin and the starting linemen will be on the field for that contest.
