What started as serving a warrant on an outstanding charge turned into a potential shootout in Marksville this morning.
Will Ray Lachney, 32, of Marksville barricaded himself in a house on Addison Street at approximately 9:30 a.m., armed with a shotgun that several  among the throng of onlookers said he had stolen from another man.
At some point during the standoff, Lachney’s mother, Sharon Lachney, suffered gunshot wounds and was flown by helicopter to an Alexandria hospital.
There has been no official version of what happened or who fired the shots. Family members of the victim and suspect said the wounds were inflicted by police officers. They also said police told them that Lachney shot his mother.
Again, authorities have not released any details on the incident and accounts included here are solely what was being said in the crowd in the neighborhood.
Several law enforcement agencies sent officers to the scene Wednesday. Among those were State Police, Department of Corrections special weapons unit, Avoyelles Sheriff’s Office, Marksville City Police, Louisiana Department of Wildlife & Fisheries and Tunica-Biloxi Tribal Police.
An unconfirmed report from family members was that Lachney “traded” the shotgun for cigarettes during the standoff, and was presently unarmed.
“He doesn’t have a gun and that’s not even his house,” a family member said.
As of 1:45 p.m. Wednesday, the area was still sealed off as law enforcement officers held a vigil.
Family members said Lachney’s father and brother were on the scene, but were not being allowed to try to talk the man out.
There were several intense moments in the crowd when Lachney’s sister, Santana Lachney, received a phone call and was told that her mother had died en route to the hospital.
Ms. Lachney was overcome by grief and others in the crowd erupted in a chaotic response to the news.
Some minutes later, it was determined the caller had been mistaken and her mother was fine at that time.
