Stafford trial set for Sept. 26; Greenhouse trial to be Nov. 28

Derrick Stafford and Norris Greenhouse Jr. pled not guilty today to 2nd-degree murder and attempted 2nd-degree murder charges in connection with a fatal traffic stop on Nov. 3.
Both men are career law enforcement officers who were moonlighting as Marksville City Marshal’s deputies when they pursued Chris Few down a dead-end street.
A State Police investigator reported that Few’s empty hands were raised inside his car when the two officers fired an estimated 20 bullets into the stopped vehicle. Few was seriously wounded. His 6-year-old son, Jeremy Mardis, was killed with multiple gunshots to his head and torso.
Stafford’s trial was set for Sept. 26. Greenhouse will go to trial on Nov. 28. Any motions in the trials will be heard on March 9, March 10, May 17 or May 18.
Jonathan Goins, Stafford’s attorney, also reurged his request that 12th Judicial District Judge Billy Bennett reduce Stafford’s $1 million bond to an affordable level. He also submitted documentation showing the value of the property to be put up as security for a bond.
He did not mention an amount in today’s hearing, but in the previous bond reduction hearing it was noted that friends and family of Stafford had promised property valued at about $150,000.
