Odell Monday

Funeral services for Odell Monday will be Saturday, April 4, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at New Pilgrim Baptist Church in Eola with Rev. Gilton Gallow officiating. Burial will be in the Blake Lake Cemetery under the direction of Melancon Funeral Home, Bunkie.Visitation will be at the New Pilgrim Baptist Church on Saturday, April 4, 2105 from 8:00 a.m. until service time. Mr. Monday, age 87, passed away on Sunday, March 29, 2015 at Bunkie General Hospital. He was the son of Annie Mae McCree and Elijah Herths. Infant Odell's dying mother entrusted her baby to her sister, Jenny Alvena McCree Monday and her husband, Joseph Monday. He accepted Christ at the early age of 9 and was baptized by the Rev. Allen Glasper of the Little Bethel Baptist Church. He grew up the son of a sharecropper turned land owner.Odell Monday was joined in holy matrimony on December 18, 1948 to Eotha Lee Riggs. To this union, God blessed them with four children; Odell, Jr., Benny Roy, Elaine and Kenneth Wayne. He was preceded in death by his sons, Kenneth Wayne and Odell, Jr. and his daughter, Elaine. In 1957, Bro. Monday moved to New York City. He contracted work as a painter with Clem and Galaxy Realty Companies. After twenty-seven years of work, he returned to the St. Landry community in 1984. He joined the New Pilgrim Baptist Church, under the leadership of Rev. Gilton Gallow. He served on the Deacon Board, faithfully until he fell on ill health on March 29, 2015 when called him home. Brother Odell Monday leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Eotha of St. Landry; his son, Benny R. Monday of Bronx, NY; a daughter, Elsie Mallory of Chicago, IL; nine grandchildren, Hasani, Sharhonda, Evelyn, Ebony, Camille, Michael, Travis, Anthony and Shaky; eight great grandchildren, Destin, Marquis, Angel, Leyla, Evan, Sierra, Amir and Jackson and many neices, nephews, and friends
