Audrey "Layne" Bernard Chenevert, 74, of Baton Rouge

Audrey "Layne" Bernard Chenevert, 74, of Baton Rouge, passed away January 15, 2016, after a courageous battle with cancer. She spent her last moments in peace and comfort while surrounded by family and close friends. Audrey grew up in Marksville, Louisiana where she graduated in 1959 from Marksville High. She went on to graduate from the Louisiana State Police Training Academy where she excelled in marksmanship, regularly "outshooting the guys." After a long and illustrious career with the LSU Police Department, Audrey retired as a Sergeant in 2000. After retirement, Audrey devoted most of her time to sewing and quilting. She was a member of several quilting guilds and donated many quilts with her signature tag "every stich sewn with love" to different charitable organizations. A sharp mind and tongue until the very end, Audrey kept active by commenting or "liking" posts from her friends and family on Facebook and completing the crossword puzzle in the newspaper every day. She loved watching the local news and keeping all her family informed about current events. One of her greatest pleasures was enjoying a meal and (large) margarita at Lafonda's Restaurant with her family. Anyone that spent time with Audrey knew that her true passion was spending time with or talking about her "grandbabies." She is survived by her children: Darrel Chenevert, Jr. and Karen Ramirez (Steve); her siblings: Dewey "Sonny" Bernard, Jr. (Brenda) and Susan DeCuir (Tommy); her grandchildren: Dawn Chenevert (Lisette Zaunbrecher), Ryan Chenevert (Dene') and Josh Ramirez (Maggi Bjorndahl); her great-granddaughter: Delaney Dantin; her sister-in-laws: Joyce Burton and Marlene Smith; and her dogs or "furbabies" as she lovingly called: Bosco and Buddy. She was preceded in death by: her husband: Darrel "Dabra" Chenevert, Sr.; her son: Kelly James Chenevert; her parents: Dewey Bernard Sr. and Aliene Dauzat Bernard; her siblings: Hazel Sampson and Don Paul Bernard; her in-laws: Ida and Truby Chenevert; and her beloved dog: Mister Man. We would like to take this opportunity thank her cherished friends: Cheryl, her "Cray Cray" crew and many others; her wonderful doctor: Dr. Vasireddy and his nurse Brittney; and the Life Source Hospice team that blessed her last days. A visitation will be held at St. Patrick's Catholic Church (12424 Brogdon Ln., Baton Rouge, LA 70816) at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 23, 2016. A mass will follow at 10:30 a.m. Immediate family will proceed to the cemetery for a private burial. *In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Cancer Services of Greater Baton Rouge, 550 Lobdell Ave, Baton Rouge, LA 70806. -
