The last three months -- especially the month of July -- have been busy for Katelyn Hines.
She graduated from Louisiana College in May. In mid-July she was introduced as the new assistant softball coach at Bunkie New Tech High.
Two weeks later, former head softball Coach D.D. Edwards stepped down. Principal David Moreau made a quick decision and called Hines into his office.
“I was surprised when he offered me the job,” Hines said. “Mr. Moreau and I talked about the situation before I decided to accept the position.”
Edwards stepped down after one season as head coach. Moreau did not release a reason for Edwards’ resignation.
“He just told me he would not be coming back to Bunkie,” Moreau said. “I was impressed with Hines when I hired her to be the assistant coach and I think she can handle the job, with proper guidance.”
Hines has already met with the softball players and is looking forward to fall workouts.
“We will start working in the fall, preparing for the softball schedule in the spring,” Hines continued. “I have been told I would have support from the administration and the athletic department.”
She was a two-time all-state catcher at Avoyelles High under coaches Shane Henderson and Samantha Roy, when the Lady Mustangs were one of the best teams in the state.
Her parents are Chris Hines of Bunkie and Katy Juneau of Moreauville.
After high school, she attended Baton Rouge Community College for two years and finished at Louisiana College, where she played catcher for the Lady Wildcats softball team.
