Efforts underway to shore up Avoyelles Parish levees

Residents in the Brouillette community have reported flood waters have reached the top of the levees in some areas. Farmers, parish inmates and others were working on levees in Brouillette and Vick, placing large sandbags on the top of the levees to raise the levees higher to keep floodwaters from spilling over. The parish Office of Emergency Preparedness said there have been no reports of injuries or destruction of property, but more than 25 families in low-lying areas have left in anticipation of flooding. The Red and Black rivers are expected to continue rising over the next few days, with the Red cresting at 60.7 ft. at Lock & Dam No. 1 on Sunday or Monday morning and the Black reaching 53 ft. at Acme Tuesday night or Wednesday morning.
