Mustangs trample visiting Vikings, 70-20

By Raymond L. Daye

It was Homecoming in Moreauville in Week 5 of the high school football season. Vidalia won the toss and elected to receive. From that point on, things got steadily worse for the visiting Vikings from just up the river from here.

The Avoyelles Mustangs recovered the onside kick. A bard of the bleachers waxed poetic, shouting, "Start this game off right / Gonna bust some heads tonight."  Not exactly Shakespeare, but a fairly good prediction of the night's events.

Four minutes and nine plays later it was home team 8, Vidalia 0. Except for the opening score of 0-0, the Vikings never got any closer than that to the Herd from Moreauville.

Fast forward and after 48 minutes Avoyelles had its first "real" win of the year, 70-20. It also evened its District 3AAA record at 1-1 -- the same as Vidalia. Avoyelles trails Marksville (2-0) in the district title hunt.

For Vidalia, there were a few perfectly pretty plays that were unfortunately lost among a mish-mash of messy mishaps.  For Avoyelles, it was long, time-consuming ground-pounding drives ending in short touchdown runs followed by an onside kick. The Mustangs kicked 10 times and recovered three onside kicks during the game.
